The glory of God · Wisdom and eternity
The oldest hymn in this module, the original poem comes from early medieval Ireland. Its manner of petition is distinctive: it asks what God will be to the singer rather than what he will give—vision, wisdom, speech and inheritance. Read stanza by stanza, it is a person handing over life's various supports one at a time. The third stanza's rejection of empty fame and human praise is particularly searching today. The tune SLANE is named after the Hill of Slane in Ireland, where Saint Patrick is said to have lit an Easter fire. Sing it unhurriedly. It also suits personal morning prayer, since it is more a prayer than a declaration.
Morning prayer, devotions and retreats; teaching on seeking God wholeheartedly; graduation or ordination services.
