Redeeming grace · Precious blood and cleansing
The entire hymn asks questions, one in each stanza and again in the refrain. Common in nineteenth-century evangelistic songs, this moves listeners from observers to participants. Its image comes from Revelation 7:14: “These are those who came out of the great suffering. They washed their robes and made them white in the Lamb’s blood.” Washing with blood and becoming white is itself a paradox, pointing to the cross's unexpected work. Hoffman, a Presbyterian pastor, wrote more than two thousand hymns. When using it as an invitation, keep the questions directed towards self-examination rather than demanding a public account from people.
