About this hymn

This hymn issues an invitation to worship together, turning angels, shepherds, the wise men seeking him and those awaiting salvation towards the newborn Christ. People of different identities come together, showing the breadth of the good news’ gathering power. Luke and Matthew record the shepherds’ and wise men’s responses respectively, helping the congregation see the connection between hearing, seeking and bowing in worship. As we sing, we can include strangers and families from different backgrounds in our welcome and care at Christmas gatherings. Our own worship can also move from observing to responding: offering thanks, listening to the Lord’s word and returning to daily life with the joy we have received.

When to use this hymn
