The glory of God · Creation and sovereignty
Written for children and included in Hymns for Little Children, the poem explains the Apostles’ Creed’s opening description of the maker of heaven and earth. The refrain states creation’s order clearly: God made these things and made them good. Genesis 1 concludes, “God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31). ⚠️ Another original stanza presents the rich in castles and the poor at their gates as ranks arranged by God. Most modern hymnals since the twentieth century omit it, and this entry does not recommend its use. Teaching the song offers a chance to explain both creation’s goodness and everyone’s equal dignity. Existing wealth and class structures must not be directly sanctified as God’s approved order, or used to resist justice, mercy and change. This distinction comes from the whole of biblical ethics, rather than from Genesis 1 alone.
