Looking at the whole journey places today’s step within the Lord’s lifelong leading. The hymn acknowledges twists and weariness along the way while remembering that the Saviour supplies grace for every need and finally brings his people to a place of rest. Provision in the wilderness reminds Israel that people must depend on God to live; Psalm 23 also places green pastures and the dark valley under the care of the same Shepherd. As we sing, we can recall an experience we did not understand at the time but later recognised as the Lord sustaining us, and entrust difficulties that remain unresolved to him. This trust makes us willing to continue obeying amid uncertainty and respond gratefully to the provision we have already received.
