Redeeming grace · The cross and substitutionary atonement
The song first looks to Christ’s majesty above all earthly powers, riches and wisdom, then contemplates the humiliation he suffered and his self-giving on the cross. Colossians 1 connects all things being created through him with his work of reconciling people through the cross; Philippians presents his path of humble obedience. This contrast fills us with wonder: the highest Lord took the initiative to love sinners and bear the cost of redemption. In meditation, we can turn being moved into repentance and thanksgiving, allowing Christ’s humility to change how we understand power, success and worth. Worship remains centred on the Saviour’s glory and the grace he has revealed to the unworthy.
