Our misery in sin · Crying out and waiting
Images of rock, shade and refuge make this hymn a prayer of taking shelter in the Lord amid a storm. While the earth is shaken, Psalm 46 affirms that God is a present help; Isaiah also praises him for protecting the poor and giving the oppressed someone on whom to rely. As we sing, we can acknowledge the reality of the storms before us and make our fears and needs known to him. The Lord’s shelter gives us strength to seek appropriate help, continue bearing our responsibilities and be willing to stay alongside those who suffer. When the church responds to this prayer with practical care, brothers and sisters can experience support in their shared lives and learn together to trust the Lord amid unsettled circumstances.
Prayer in trouble, care after disasters, pastoral visits and worship on trust.
