About this hymn

Luther based this hymn on Psalm 46. Often called the Reformation's battle song, it draws on “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1). Notice its progression. The first stanza speaks of protection; the second admits our own strength cannot be trusted; only then does the third face darkness's power. There the German text uses the language of an already completed judgement: the enemy has been judged and one word brings him down. Jesus likewise says, “about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.” (John 16:11). This is assurance of a verdict already delivered, rather than an optimistic estimate. The last stanza says God's Kingdom remains even if life and possessions are taken, words written when people truly died for faith. “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) gives this composure its source. Use the hymn on Reformation Sunday or when the church faces trouble.
